Free turn-based mystery game

Midnight Train is a turn-based mystery game for mature players who are not afraid of a little blood and gore. This episodic game was created by an independent developer named Lydia. Within four chapters, you must figure out why passengers of a train suddenly disappear after it stops at a mysterious town. In addition to fantasy and horror, the game tackles serious topics such as suicide, abuse, and torture so players should proceed with caution.

What happened in the Midnight Train?

Other than the story, Midnight Train is no different from other turn-based role-playing games; during your turn, you will select an action for the main character to perform. You will play as Luna Wyndell, a mute girl who communicates with others by writing things down in a notebook. In the beginning, she rides the train but doesn’t mention where she's going or why she needs to be there.

She meets a panicky, naive but gentle boy named Neil Lawton. He may have his flaws, but he is always willing to help Luna solve puzzles and riddles. Also on the train is Luna’s childhood friend, Selene Ambrose. You would think that you could trust a longtime companion, but Selene seems to be acting weird. Diana Lovelace and Apollo Carson are also characters in the game, but you will need to figure out if you can trust them or not

Diana is a timid girl but enjoys performing experiments and testing medicines. However, perhaps the worst character is Apollo, who isn't interested in helping Luna or Neil in their journey. While the game is available for free, you will need to have the runtime package of RPG Maker VX Ace installed. This will allow the game to run—but in case it doesn’t, the developer recommends that you move the game file into RPG Maker

Short but solid RPG

Fans of the supernatural and mystery genre will find Midnight Train frighteningly fun. Its small but strong cast of characters makes the story easy to follow, but the adventure is pretty short. The replayability of the game is low since you can only have a limited number of commands to choose from. Regardless, it is still rewarding to discover the secrets of the train.

PROS

  • Well-written mystery
  • Strong cast of characters
  • Uses common turn-based gameplay

CONS

  • Limited number of commands
  • Suited for mature players
  • Tackles serious and violent topics
